What you'll do:
As Lead Game Artist and Art Director based in Taipei, you will immerse yourself in shaping the visual narrative of each title from inception through launch. Your day-to-day will involve collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to set artistic benchmarks that align with project goals. You will provide guidance on everything from initial sketches to polished assets—ensuring every detail reflects the desired style. By fostering open communication channels between artists, designers, programmers, and external partners alike, you will help create an environment where creativity flourishes. Your ability to balance hands-on involvement in asset review with strategic oversight of workflow efficiency will be key to delivering memorable gaming experiences. Success in this role means not only producing beautiful visuals but also cultivating a culture of shared learning where everyone feels supported in growing their skills.
- Define the overall visual style for each project, ensuring consistency with the intended aesthetic direction, particularly focusing on Japanese and Korean influences while remaining open to other styles as needed.
- Supervise and integrate all artistic elements within products, including but not limited to 2D character design, environmental art, special effects, animation sequences, cinematic presentation, and user interface assets.
- Monitor the quality of artwork produced by the team while managing resources efficiently to optimise both output standards and production costs.
- Develop, refine, and implement best practices for art workflows that enhance productivity without compromising creative integrity or visual excellence.
- Recruit, train, mentor, and manage members of the art department to foster a supportive atmosphere that encourages skill development and teamwork.
- Collaborate closely with other internal teams such as game design, programming, audio, and production to ensure seamless integration of art assets into the overall game experience.
- Coordinate with external vendors or outsourcing studios by providing clear guidelines and feedback to maintain consistent quality across all deliverables.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends in digital art creation—including AI-powered tools—and champion their adoption where they can add value to the workflow.
- Prepare clear documentation and easy-to-read reports or spreadsheets that track progress, communicate expectations, and support decision-making processes.
- Take responsibility for meeting deadlines by self-managing tasks effectively while adapting quickly to new challenges or changes in project scope.
What you bring:
To excel as Lead Game Artist and Art Director you will bring not only technical mastery but also emotional intelligence—balancing artistic vision with empathy towards your colleagues’ needs. Your background should include hands-on experience creating compelling 2D assets for games alongside exposure to various digital painting techniques. Familiarity with emerging AI-driven workflows is highly desirable; however genuine curiosity about these technologies coupled with openness toward ongoing training is equally valued. Your written communication must be clear enough for others outside your discipline to understand complex ideas quickly—whether drafting process guides or summarising feedback from playtests. Above all else your commitment to nurturing talent within your team sets you apart: you thrive when helping others succeed collectively rather than individually.
- Demonstrated proficiency in visual arts with a solid foundation in drawing techniques across multiple styles relevant to modern game development.
- Willingness to learn about or actively use AI-based illustration tools such as Stable Diffusion/ComfyUI or MidJourney/Niji for enhanced productivity.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills that enable effective collaboration within teams as well as across departments or with external partners.
- Proven ability to manage people compassionately—providing mentorship while encouraging personal growth within a communal setting.
- Strong organisational skills reflected in your capacity for preparing clear documentation and easily digestible spreadsheets or reports.
- Self-motivation combined with adaptability; you are dependable when it comes to completing assigned tasks independently while embracing new concepts enthusiastically.
- At least two years’ experience contributing directly to commercial game development projects—ideally involving both 2D asset creation and pipeline management.
