Save job

Keywords: Optical, Firmware A leading global technology organisation is seeking a Senior Firmware Engineer to drive the architecture, development, integration, and verification of embedded firmware for mid-board optical transceivers.

What you'll do:

  • Architect and implement embedded firmware for optical transceiver control systems using MCU-based designs and active control loops in a predominantly bare metal environment.
  • Lead the development of low-level drivers for interfaces such as I²C/MDIO, ADC/DAC, GPIO, PMIC, SPI, UART, as well as thermal and laser control systems.
  • Design and implement SFF/CMIS-compliant state machines and memory maps tailored for optical transceiver modules to ensure standards compliance.
  • Develop sophisticated algorithms for module startup sequencing, fault management, chipset interaction, and closed-loop optical power or temperature control.
  • Ensure safe and deterministic firmware behaviour across all module states including initialisation, low-power operation, high-power modes, diagnostics, firmware updates, and more.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware, software, optics, electrical, mechanical, and process teams to optimise design for manufacture (DFM) and test (DFT), validating end-to-end module behaviour.
  • Own debugging of complex system-level issues such as thermal runaway protection mechanisms, laser bias tuning procedures, signal integrity interactions, PMD or chipset state anomalies.
  • Support the initial bring-up of integrated modules as well as ongoing support throughout the product life cycle to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Lead root-cause analysis efforts for firmware-related field returns or customer-reported issues to drive continuous improvement.
  • Assist with characterisation of new and existing hardware components to enhance product capabilities.
  • Develop engineering tools using C# and Python for manufacturing processes and sales support activities.
  • Maintain revision control systems, documentation standards, and processes governing firmware release flows.
  • Participate actively in design reviews, customer calls, failure analysis sessions, and interoperability testing initiatives.

What you bring:

  • Over five years of embedded firmware experience ideally within optical transceivers or high-speed communications products demonstrating deep technical proficiency.
  • Advanced skills in C programming language complemented by knowledge or experience in C# development as well as embedded systems running RTOS environments.
  • Ability to design maintainable state machines along with drivers and hardware-firmware abstractions that facilitate modularity and scalability.
  • Expertise in debugging techniques utilising logic analysers, I²C/MDIO sniffers, oscilloscopes, JTAG interfaces to resolve complex hardware-software interactions.
  • Familiarity with automated testing frameworks coupled with scripting abilities in Python for lab bench workflows enhancing productivity.
  • Comprehensive understanding of optical transceiver architectures including product design schematics plus CMIS/SFF-8636/MDIO/I²C protocols alongside low-level hardware interfaces.
  • Experience with laser control technologies (VCSEL/DFB/EML), TEC or thermal management systems as well as power sequencing methodologies relevant to optical modules.
  • Knowledge of signal integrity fundamentals combined with awareness of high-speed link behaviour essential for reliable communications.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-disciplinary teams while interfacing professionally with customers when required fostering trustful relationships.
  • Excellent documentation habits paired with an ownership mindset ensuring thoroughness in revision control processes for firmware releases.
  • Comfortable working within fast-paced NPI environments characterised by tight schedules requiring adaptability without compromising quality outcomes.
  • Experience in ASICs/SoCs/FPGAs/Switch ICs/DSP control/integration considered advantageous but not mandatory.
