Keywords: RTOS, MCU firmware, hardware interface, memory isolation, inter-processor communication A leading AI-enhanced technology company is seeking a Senior and Principal Firmware Engineer specialising in microcontroller and real-time operating systems to join their talented team in Taipei.

What you'll do:

  • Design and implement robust real-time execution environments using platforms such as FreeRTOS, Zephyr or custom kernels to efficiently manage multi-threaded security tasks.
  • Develop low-level drivers including DMA, SPI, I2C, and Mailbox with meticulous attention to input validation and memory isolation to prevent buffer overflows or unauthorised access.
  • Configure and maintain Memory Protection Unit (MPU) settings to enforce strict process isolation and ensure code cannot execute in data regions.
  • Optimise Inter-Processor Communication (IPC) between microcontrollers and host systems such as x86 Host/BMC, maintaining high throughput while preserving stringent security boundaries.
  • Apply secure coding practices including MISRA-C standards and actively participate in threat modelling sessions to identify potential architectural weaknesses within firmware.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware teams to ensure silicon security features are fully leveraged by the software stack.
  • Conduct deep-system debugging using tools like JTAG/SWD, logic analysers, and GDB to resolve complex issues at both hardware and firmware levels.
  • Engage in ongoing review of firmware architecture to enhance stability, performance, and resilience against emerging threats.
  • Document technical designs comprehensively for future reference and knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Support junior engineers through mentoring and guidance, fostering a culture of communal learning.

What you bring:

  • Over five years of hands-on experience in MCU-level C programming with platforms such as ARM Cortex-M or RISC-V.
  • Comprehensive understanding of real-time operating system concepts including context switching, interrupt handling, mutexes, and scheduling algorithms.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of Secure Boot processes, Chain of Trust principles, and advanced memory isolation techniques using MPU/MMU.
  • Proficiency with deep-system debugging tools such as JTAG/SWD interfaces, logic analysers, and GDB for troubleshooting complex hardware-firmware interactions.
  • Practical experience working with high-speed serial protocols like DMA, SPI, I2C along with familiarity with hardware-based crypto accelerators.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop low-level drivers with a focus on input validation and memory isolation strategies.
  • Experience applying secure coding standards such as MISRA-C within embedded environments.
  • Active participation in threat modelling sessions aimed at identifying architectural weaknesses within firmware design.
  • Excellent documentation skills for technical designs coupled with effective communication abilities across multidisciplinary teams.
  • A nurturing approach towards mentoring junior engineers combined with enthusiasm for communal learning.
