What you'll do:

  • Guide and nurture a geographically distributed team of software engineers responsible for delivering all Linux kernels for the Ubuntu Linux distribution.
  • Take ownership of specific aspects of Ubuntu Linux, which may include collaborating with silicon or cloud partners to optimise kernels for their execution environments.
  • Ensure the platform runs seamlessly across diverse hardware platforms by coordinating technical efforts and supporting compatibility initiatives.
  • Define and execute stringent quality control standards expected by the global user community, maintaining reliability and performance at every stage.
  • Mitigate emerging security threats and exploits affecting the Linux kernel by staying ahead of vulnerabilities and implementing proactive solutions.
  • Drive process automation related to build, test, and delivery pipelines for the Linux kernel to enhance efficiency and consistency.
  • Engage regularly with other internal teams, the open source community, and commercial partners to share knowledge and align on strategy.
  • Facilitate technical delivery by setting clear goals, providing guidance, and supporting your engineers in achieving successful outcomes.
  • Positively influence team culture through empathy, encouragement, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to ensure alignment between technical objectives and broader organisational goals.

What you bring:

  • Significant programming experience in C is essential; proficiency in Python, Golang or similar languages is highly regarded.
  • Substantial familiarity with operating system kernel internals and concepts; expertise in Linux is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading teams of software engineers in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to coordinate between multiple distinct teams with differing technical focus to achieve shared objectives.
  • Familiarity with version control practices; experience with git is ideal.
  • Prior experience developing with software packaging formats; direct exposure to Ubuntu/Debian/Snap is highly valued.
  • Professional written and spoken English skills coupled with excellent presentation abilities.
  • Willingness to travel internationally for company events.
