Understanding emigration drivers for an enhanced talent strategy

See how a government organisation leveraged our tailored demographic and economic research to optimise their talent attraction strategy.

Case study

Our partnership with a government organisation led to an increased understanding of emigration drivers with detailed research backed by a survey of 2,000 people. The survey was used to gain an understanding of talent lifestyle and expectations, helping our client enhance their talent attraction strategy.

  • Service: Research & Consultancy
  • Industry: Government
  • Location: ANZ

The survey

  • 2,000+

    UK residents surveyed

  • 20+

    motivations for emigration identified

  • 17

sources of information influencing decision-making for emigration

  • 6

key barriers and concerns about emigration identified

The insights

  • 83%

of UK residents are more likely to consider emigration based on the experiences of those they know.

  • 57%

of middle management professionals in the UK cite a better lifestyle as a motivator for emigration.

  • 43%

of UK residents consider our client's location for better cost of living.

  • 50%

of UK residents consider moving to our client's location for a better quality of life.

The challenge

Before working with the Robert Walters Market Intelligence team, our client was trying to uncover the drivers, motivations, and barriers influencing decisions about emigration for UK-based talent. To effectively compile a targeted programme, these insights were critical to encourage emigration to the client's location.

The solution

To explore the drivers behind emigration, the Market Intelligence team analysed general demographics as well as net migration.

The analysis of 2,000 UK residents provided the primary research for understanding the motivations behind emigration. These motivations ranged from barriers and concerns to the perception of our client's location, as well as what people value when emigrating.

The survey design was developed in accordance with Market Research Authority guidance and independently validated for compliance. In addition, the survey was further validated by comprehensive secondary research covering topics such as EVP priorities per demographic, skills availability metrics, as well as insights into accessibility to information about emigrating.

The impact

Our research was analysed and segmented into actionable recommendations. This analysis also revealed the following:

  • Barriers to emigration include the emotional barrier of leaving family and friends behind – cited by 48% of respondents.
  • 36% of respondents cited visa complexity and 38% of respondents were concerned about resettlement, such as finding a job or property.

However, an analysis of lifestyle and cost of living indicate these are the main reasons talent in the UK is looking to emigrate. It is therefore vital to show this target audience tangible benefits to living and working in the client's location.
