What education, training and experience do I need to become a web developer?
A web developer can be employed without any formal qualifications. There are a multitude of ways to learn web development theories and skills but it depends on individual needs. Technically savvy people can be self-taught - there are many books, online video tutorials, and blogs that teach the basics of web development. People who choose this route will need to already have technology skills and be able to learn on their own. Informal training on the job and experience are also acceptable, with skills developed through practice. However entry to the field may be easier with some sort of formal qualifications.

Certificate, diploma and degree courses in web design and information technology are widely available and offered by numerous Registered Training Organisations, including TAFE, and universities in NSW and the ACT. Through a university a common path to complete study in BSCS (Bachelor of Science in Computer Science) or a MSCS (Master of Science in computer science), and a VET qualification in interactive digital media or information technology, specialising in websites or website development is also favourable.
