What you'll do:
As Director of Research and Development in Component Technology, you will immerse yourself in the dynamic world of silicon photonics innovation. Your day-to-day activities will involve collaborating with leading minds across the industry to establish advanced capabilities for photonic devices and integrated circuit solutions. You will be responsible for guiding projects from concept through implementation—ensuring every solution meets rigorous application performance standards while remaining practical for large-scale manufacturing. By leveraging your deep technical knowledge alongside your ability to foster strong partnerships both internally and externally, you will help shape the direction of next-generation optical modules. Your success will be measured not only by technical achievements but also by your ability to mentor others, promote knowledge sharing across teams, and contribute meaningfully to a culture built on supportiveness and shared goals.
* Acquire an expert-level understanding of advanced silicon photonics technology to drive innovation in new optical device development and integration.
* Conduct comprehensive analyses of optical system requirements, defining precise component specifications to ensure optimal performance across diverse applications.
* Collaborate extensively with industry design partners as well as internal and external customers to align on optoelectronic component strategies and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design approaches.
* Assess process capabilities required for achieving target component specifications, ensuring manufacturability and scalability for high-volume production environments.
* Lead feasibility studies to validate new design strategies, proposing novel technology developments that expand organisational capabilities in photonics.
* Engage in joint development initiatives with strategic customers and industry partners, fostering co-operative relationships that accelerate technological advancement.
* Work closely with multi-disciplinary design teams to ensure seamless integration of PIC designs with other critical components such as mechanical structures, module fabrication processes, hardware circuits, and control systems.
* Mentor engineers and cross-functional groups by sharing insights into the implications of PIC design choices on overall system performance and manufacturability.
* Champion best practices in design validation, simulation, and tape-out processes using state-of-the-art EDA or EPDA tools tailored for PIC development.
