Principal OpenBMC Engineer (Upstream)
Keywords: OpenBMC, Upstream A leading AI-enhanced security processor organisation is seeking a Principal OpenBMC Engineer (Upstream) to take on a pivotal role in the development and upstream support of next-generation server System-on-Chip (SoC) hardware.
What you'll do:
- Implement comprehensive QEMU machine and model support for advanced SoC platforms, ensuring robust emulation capabilities that meet upstream requirements.
- Integrate QEMU-based emulation seamlessly into OpenBMC build processes and continuous integration flows, enhancing automated testing and validation.
- Add, maintain, and optimise SoC machine configurations within the OpenBMC tree, including device trees, machine configurations, board-specific recipes, and related artefacts.
- Collaborate closely with upstream maintainers to facilitate thorough review cycles, secure acceptance of changes, and ensure long-term maintenance of critical code contributions.
- Design and integrate QEMU-based test scenarios to validate essential platform functionality such as boot processes, basic services, and driver operations within OpenBMC CI environments.
- Work alongside QA and DevOps teams to enhance platform reliability through rigorous testing protocols and scenario validation.
- Rebase Linux code bases to align with LF OpenBMC standards, applying kernel fixes from mainline sources as well as community patches when necessary.
- Debug complex issues encountered in both QEMU emulation and physical hardware environments; work collaboratively with stakeholders to resolve challenges efficiently.
- Manage technical submission cycles for patches by engaging directly with subsystem maintainers to successfully land foundational code for new SoCs.
What you bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience demonstrating dependable problem-solving abilities.
- Over ten years of proven experience in Linux kernel development and device driver engineering within collaborative teams.
- Extensive hands-on experience using emulation or virtualisation tools such as QEMU or Docker for system bring-up or testing purposes.
- Comprehensive understanding of hardware interfaces relevant to BMCs including I²C, SPI, GPIO, UART, eMMC, eSPI, PCIe, watchdogs, sensors and more.
- Demonstrated history of contributing to open-source projects such as OpenBMC, QEMU or the Linux kernel through patch submissions or code reviews.
- Ability to work effectively within interdependent teams while communicating complex technical concepts clearly across diverse audiences.
- Commitment to knowledge-sharing practices that foster communal growth within engineering networks.
- Sensitivity towards inclusive collaboration practices that encourage input from under-represented groups within open-source communities.
- Enthusiasm for ongoing professional development through training opportunities provided by supportive leadership.
